Away with the family for the week, we were renting a large house in the village of Lympsham, just outside Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset. The house overlooked a large field in which cattle were grazing a very dry grass. Surrounded by farms it was no surprise there were Swallows about, but the first to catch my eye was a couple of Small Copper butterflies flitting around in the long grass.
Back in the afternoon to the house the challenge were the Swallows that were hawking low over the grass filed amongst the cattle. Of lots of shots this was the only acceptable one.
What was a surprise, was this immature Grey Heron in the middle of the field. The fields are surrounded by ditches that are called rhynes here, most of them are dried up. The heron was hunting, stalking through the grass, mice and voles probably on the menu.
The highlight of the evening though were a pair of Roe Deer. They appeared initially at the far side of the field, then they came running across the field that caught the attention of the cattle, who were all about a year old and they ran after them. This made me think the deer were running away from the cows, but looking at this first photograph, it seems that these are adult deer, and this being the time of the Roe Deer rut, the buck was probably being very amorous.
Lets hope everything ended as it should do.
Later that evening the full moon appeared above the horizon. This month the full moon is known as the "Sturgeon" moon. Named by the native Americans due to the abundance of the Sturgeon fish at this time of the year.
